MidCountry Financial Corp. warns against fake check scam.
Hoax using company's name attempts to defraud individuals.

MACON, Ga. (10-20-11) MidCountry Financial Corp., a company with a long track record of ethical business practices and recipient of a 2011 Better Business Bureau (BBB) Torch Award for Marketplace Ethics, is warning consumers nationwide about a scam in which the company's name is being used illegally.

In the scam, consumers receive a check in the mail (the amounts have varied) claiming to be from MidCountry Financial Corp. The hoax also includes an email address that is allegedly used to verify the consumer's information.

MidCountry Financial Corp. is not originating these checks and is aggressively investigating this hoax.

Consumers receiving these fraudulent checks should not try to cash them, nor should they send an email to the address provided. Instead, consumers should hold onto the check as evidence, and immediately contact their state attorney general's fraud hotline to report the incident (a list of attorneys general can be found at www.naag.org). They can also report the incident to the Federal Trade Commission, which can be done online at www.FTC.gov, or by phone at 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357).
