Richard W. Carpenter is spokesperson for the Independent Directors of MidCountry Financial, and on the Audit Committee. During his career in banking and investing, Carpenter was active in several mortgage banking organizations. He began his career with The Citizens and Southern National Bank in 1959, and in 1972 was elected president of Citizens and Southern Realty Investors, assuming the management of the Real Estate Finance department. From 1975 to 1979, Carpenter served as General Vice President of Real Estate Finance for Citizens and Southern National Bank. Carpenter has been President and Chairman of the Board for SouthMark Properties, an Atlanta-based real estate investment trust, and is a former Vice Chairman and Director of both First Liberty Financial Corp. and First Liberty Bank. Carpenter is also the former President and Director of Realmark Holdings Corp. and Commonwealth Oil Refining Company, Inc. He is currently a Director of Wells Real Estate Investment Trust, Inc.
